Reminiscence

A post after a bit too long.. Composition of whats been happening in the meanwhile..
As 2009 dawned, i was pretty sure of the life's short-lessons and the examinations that i had to clear before moving into the next league. Sure-footed with renewed confidence to do better and surpass set-goals have been the motto from the first of Jan. I have been judiciously juggled both of my split-lives (work and personal) to a reasonable extent and am more compassionate towards the society.
Giving back something to the society topped my "To-do" charts for this year. Hence, i decided to pursue "Deepam" a NPO run for bridging the literacy divide for the under-privileged kids. Believe me..the sessions with the kids over the weekends are a significant stress-buster and thought-provoking! I try to make it to all the sessions without fail, although i have missed a few due to planned circumstances and one-off events.
Being a movie-buff, i decided to plunge in to them (jus like age-old Rajasthan days) and watch the selected few like Munich, Shawshank Redemption, sit-coms like SATC, F.R.I.E.N.D.S and such others. They just ooze with creativity and have tingled my brain-buds to pursue the knowledge of film-making. Of course, i take a lot of cues from the vanity world and one such thing is this: Making a list of what all i would like to have in my life...and working my sweet a** off to have them in place within the next ten years. I had a real-hard time in making a realistic list (i do have a 3-series BMW on it:P).

Ultimate has taken a new definition in streamlining my way of living. This sport has so become an integral part of my life, that my biological clock is attuned to wake me up at 5:00 ! Not that, i have not done it before but this is with more agility and energy. Thanks to the wonderful set of folks and friends... this sport seriously keeps me fit and drives me to have extended work-sessions and push myself to the limits.

Nothing much to update on the personal front. Too bad for the shackles and respect for my community..Oh yeah ! a whole lot of my cuz's got married and became Daddies.. Sigh! people younger than me... Jeez..i seriously admire them from one side..but at the same time, angry at them for starting production at such an early stage! I went for a few..missed a few..but overall i am happy for them seeing settled in life. Every dog has its day :)

Officially, i have been promoted..more responsibilities, longer work-hours (i hope not) and the list is just endless here. However, it is true that rejoice is in the air for 2009 ! More to come.. i have a weakness for cars and i jus fell weak on my knees when i saw the new Fiat Linea ! Would test-drive it and be back to write my reviews about it.

Attention to detail - Unilever Logo

Unilever, the brand behind most of the common house-hold products these days. Any commercial soaps, saas-bahu ki serials, sports, travelogues...you name any ad space, these guys are all over. Having a turnover of over US $ 50.00 billion and a little over 2 lac employees, this conglomerate celebrated its 75th anniversary with a sprightly designed new logo. I appreciate its diligence to perfection and sense of convergence of all its product line under one symbol. The logo consolidates the sign of vitality, which is the 'bigger picture' to be realized from it. Each icon which has gone into the making of the logo signifies a distinct aspect of Unilever's business. To be exact, the logo is a confluence of 25 different icons representative of Unilever's business interests.
Interestingly, the logo was created by Sri Lanka's Lowe LDB in a weeks time. Quote unquote from its director "The visual elements were these symbols and all it did was to suggest that 'U' can make a difference." Kudos to these folks!
David Ogilvy quoted: "If it doesn't sell, it is'nt creative"

Thinking Loud !

This post was inspired by someone who intrigued me to think out loud and so i am posting on the top five things that i would be accomplishing in the years to come. (I hate deadlines :P)

So..here you go : Read my compilations and feel free to be my best critic.

1.) Scuba Dive with the sharks in the Great Barrier Reef - Off Australian Coast
2.) Be in the big white cage and pay a visit to the Great White Shark - Gold Coast
3.) Rapple down the 750 ft steep 'Whiteside Mountains' in North Carolina.
4.) Off-Roading from Burma to Paris
5.) Make sweet passionate love to the 'ONE', while sailing 60,000 feet above ground level :)

Think loud and chase your dreams... Do one thing (which you have never done before) everyday that scares the shit outta you!

Ain't I Croonin: Life's a Roller Coaster..Jus Gotta Ride it !!

Zillio moments of truth
Anger fermented over time

Y.... ? Cemented shield and nowhere to hide
Buoyant spirit, yet tied down by plenty of rules to bide
Crucifixed X & O's

X-mas thy come..... clouds streamin snow-balled tears
Summer thy come.... sunlit windows and naked shadows...
Spring thy come... blossomed colors and sprightly toddlers....
Come what may... will my life change.... will i change?

Y not.. welcome the change... fill in the abyss voids....
A lot more than gulping throat burning spit-fires....
Be the Man ! Be U !

Back on track... for the detour was short like the fleeting life of a firefly
fast as a zipping convoy.....and resourceful as the earth movers...
Cheers to a brighter and an exciting phase!!

p.s: Spit-fire is a must try drink at Greams Road Fruit Shop. (Grape juice with hard pepper grounded)

We are People, not Programmed Devices - Chetan Bhagat

On a work-filled Tuesday morning, this mail flows into my box and as i have been an ardent fan of CB, i pry myself away from mind-sapping work to read this brilliant speech made at Symbiosis, Pune. I am ctrl c-v the speech here for the reading pleasure of all:

Good Morning, everyone and thank you for giving me this chance to speak to you. This day is about you. You, who have come to this college, leaving the comfort of your homes (or in some cases discomfort), to become something in your life. I am sure you are excited. There are few days in human life when one is truly elated. The first day in college is one of them. When you were getting ready today, you felt a tingling in your stomach. What would the auditorium be like, what would the teachers be like, who are my new classmates - there is so much to be curious about. I call this excitement, the spark within you that makes you feel truly alive today. Today I am going to talk about keeping the spark shining. Or to put it another way, how to be happy most, if not all the time.

Where do these sparks start? I think we are born with them. My 3-year old twin boys have a million sparks. A little Spiderman toy can make them jump on the bed. They get thrills from creaky swings in the park. A story from daddy gets them excited. They do a daily countdown for birthday party - several months in advance - just for the day they will cut their own birthday cake.

I see students like you, and I still see some sparks. But when I see older people, the spark is difficult to find. That means as we age, the spark fades. People whose spark has faded too much are dull, dejected, aimless and bitter. Remember Kareena in the first half of Jab We Met vs the second half? That is what happens when the spark is lost. So how to save the spark?

Imagine the spark to be a lamp's flame. The first aspect is nurturing - to give your spark the fuel, continuously. The second is to guard against storms.
To nurture, always have goals. It is human nature to strive, improve and achieve full potential. In fact, that is success. It is what is possible for you. It isn't any external measure - a certain cost to company pay package, a particular car or house. Most of us are from middle class families. To us, having material landmarks is success and rightly so. When you have grown up where money constraints force everyday choices, financial freedom is a big achievement. But it isn't the purpose of life. If that was the case, Mr. Ambani would not show up for work. Shah Rukh Khan would stay at home and not dance anymore. Steve Jobs won't be working hard to make a better iPhone, as he sold Pixar for billions of dollars already. Why do they do it? What makes them come to work everyday? They do it because it makes them happy. They do it because it makes them feel alive. Just getting better from current levels feels good. If you study hard, you can improve your rank. If you make an effort to interact with people, you will do better in interviews. If you practice, your cricket will get better. You may also know that you cannot become Tendulkar, yet. But you can get to the next level. Striving for that next level is important.

Nature designed with a random set of genes and circumstances in which we were born. To be happy, we have to accept it and make the most of nature's design. Are you? Goals will help you do that. I must add, don't just have career or academic goals. Set goals to give you a balanced, successful life. I use the word balanced before successful. Balanced means ensuring your health, relationships, mental peace are all in good order. There is no point of getting a promotion on the day of your breakup. There is no fun in driving a car if your back hurts. Shopping is not enjoyable if your mind is full of tensions.

You must have read some quotes - Life is a tough race, it is a marathon or whatever. No, from what I have seen so far, life is one of those races in nursery school, where you have to run with a marble in a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no point coming first. Same with life, where health and relationships are the marble. Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Else, you may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and alive, will start to die.

One last thing about nurturing the spark - don't take life seriously. One of my yoga teachers used to make students laugh during classes. One student asked him if these jokes would take away something from the yoga practice. The teacher said - don't be serious, be sincere. This quote has defined my work ever since. Whether its my writing, my job, my relationships or any of my goals. I get thousands of opinions on my writing everyday. There is heaps of praise, there is intense criticism. If I take it all seriously, how will I write? Or rather, how will I live?

Life is not to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a pre-paid card with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another 50 years. And 50 years is just 2,500 weekends. Do we really need to get so worked up? It's ok, bunk a few classes, goof up a few interviews, fall in love. We are people, not programmed devices.
I've told you three things - reasonable goals, balance and not taking it too seriously that will nurture the spark. However, there are four storms in life that will threaten to completely put out the flame. These must be guarded against. These are disappointment, frustration, unfairness and loneliness of purpose.

Disappointment will come when your effort does not give you the expected return. If things don't go as planned or if you face failure. Failure is extremely difficult to handle, but those that do come out stronger. What did this failure teach me? is the question you will need to ask. You will feel miserable. You will want to quit, like I wanted to when nine publishers rejected my first book. Some IITians kill themselves over low grades - how silly is that? But that is how much failure can hurt you. But it's life. If challenges could always be overcome, they would cease to be a challenge. And remember - if you are failing at something, that means you are at your limit or potential. And that's where you want to be.

Disappointment's cousin is frustration, the second storm. Have you ever been frustrated? It happens when things are stuck. This is especially relevant in India . From traffic jams to getting that job you deserve, sometimes things take so long that you don't know if you chose the right goal. After books, I set the goal of writing for Bollywood, as I thought they needed writers. I am called extremely lucky, but it took me five years to get close to a release. Frustration saps excitement, and turns your initial energy into something negative, making you a bitter person.

How did I deal with it? A realistic assessment of the time involved - movies take a long time to make even though they are watched quickly, seeking a certain enjoyment in the process rather than the end result - at least I was learning how to write scripts, having a side plan - I had my third book to write and even something as simple as pleasurable distractions in your life - friends, food, travel can help you overcome it. Remember, nothing is to be taken seriously. Frustration is a sign somewhere, you took it too seriously.

Unfairness - this is hardest to deal with, but unfortunately that is how our country works. People with connections, rich dads, beautiful faces, pedigree find it easier to make it - not just in Bollywood, but everywhere. And sometimes it is just plain luck. There are so few opportunities in India , so many stars need to be aligned for you to make it happen. Merit and hard work is not always linked to achievement in the short term, but the long term correlation is high, and ultimately things do work out. But realize, there will be some people luckier than you. In fact, to have an opportunity to go to college and understand this speech in English means you are pretty damm lucky by Indian standards. Let's be grateful for what we have and get the strength to accept what we don't. I have so much love from my readers that other writers cannot even imagine it. However, I don't get literary praise. It's ok. I don't look like Aishwarya Rai, but I have two boys who I think are more beautiful than her. It's ok. Don't let unfairness kill your spark.

Finally, the last point that can kill your spark is isolation. As you grow older you will realize you are unique. When you are little, all kids want Ice cream and Spiderman. As you grow older to college, you still are a lot like your friends. But ten years later and you realize you are unique.
What you want, what you believe in, what makes you feel, may be different from even the people closest to you. This can create conflict as your goals may not match with others. . And you may drop some of them. Basketball captains in college invariably stop playing basketball by the time they have their second child. They give up something that meant so much to them. They do it for their family. But in doing that, the spark dies. Never, ever make that compromise. Love yourself first, and then others.

There you go. I've told you the four thunderstorms - disappointment, frustration, unfairness and isolation. You cannot avoid them, as like the monsoon they will come into your life at regular intervals. You just need to keep the raincoat handy to not let the spark die.
I welcome you again to the most wonderful years of your life. If someone gave me the choice to go back in time, I will surely choose college. But I also hope that ten years later as well, your eyes will shine the same way as they do today. That you will Keep the Spark alive, not only through college, but through the next 2,500 weekends. And I hope not just you, but my whole country will keep that spark alive, as we really need it now more than any moment in history. And there is something cool about saying - I come from the land of a billion sparks.

Highway on my Plate (HOMP!)

Finally i managed to pull the socks of the Hathway guy to install the CAS box at my place. I am able to flick through channels without cringing my eye on lack of clarity. As i was shifting channels, NDTV Good Times caught my eye, where there was a serial on which i have always been an ardent, passionate lover :O "FOOD" !! It was titled "Highway on my Plate (HOMP!), where two anchors (Rocky and Mayur) travel the length and breadth of India (I have seen mostly places in South India) and eat at famous places. Apart from the content, what i really loved about this flick is the sooper-coolness of the anchors. Both wear dhoti's (maybe to loosen it according to the proportion that goes in). Mayur (aka Audrey) is a veggie, resembles a lot like my best pal..is my personal favorite. Rocky with his pony-tail and no-mincing words surely has a magnanimous screen presence. From knowing the subtle differences between masala dosa and Mysore masala dosa to why a hotel is called military hotel to the quirky 'food quotes' its rolling fun all the way.
Must watch on Tuesdays at 10:00 P.M (IST)

Emotions Vs Logic : A Jumble of Words

"Ultimately, the most important determinant of happiness is the extent to which people have free choice in how to live their lives," Inglehart said.
Too many wrongs
Forceful eviction - a mournful song
The protective ME in all bays
Hurting U in every way
Wish i had a rewind button
to excercise control over past
Forlorn and suppressed...
Sheer bliss at times...
Alas...lifes a bitch
Only that, the past finds a way to haunt and hunt you down
In need and indeed..
Switching tracks and choices..
After all.. Life always ain't a bitch..
Tame it and be GAME for the puppet show.

A Blogger who strikes a chord with a class

I accidentally jumped on a blog of Sonia Faleiro, who has a brilliant style of writing which makes the reader re-live the moments of truth. Thats what most of the bloggers/authors/novelists crave for and makes them the best-seelers. No wonder, she recieves so many clicks a day. ok.. i do understand that originality is the essence to a blog, but i just could not resist myself in dissipating the pleasure of reading i had to a larger group of audience :) Happy reading to all.

And a slight humorous twist !

Somethin' Stupid

It was a song written by Carson Parks and was released in the late 1960's by the father-daughter duo: Frank & Nancy Sinatra for their album "The World We Knew". This song won the prestigious first Gold single for Frank Sinatra. Robbie Williams and academy award winner Nicole Kidman "The Interpreter" (one of the films i like) sung in 2001 and it once again soared in the charts.

Its such a lovely song with lilting tunes that makes you sway....
and forces you to listen all through the day :)))

The lyrics are here and sing along!!!

I know I stand in line
Until you think you have the time
To spend an evening with me
And if we go someplace to dance
I know that there's a chance
You won't be leaving with me

Then afterwards we drop into a quiet little place
And have a drink or two
And then I go and spoil it all
By saying something stupid
Like I love you

I can see it in your eyes
You still despise the same old lines
You heard the night before
And though it's just a line to you
For me it's true
And never seemed so right before

I practice every day to find some cleverlines to say
To make the meaning come true
But then I think I'll wait until the evening gets late
And I'm alone with you

The time is right
Your perfume fills my head
The stars get red
And oh the night's so blue
And then I go and spoil it all
By saying something stupid
Like I love you
I love you...

Is it a crime to be innocent?

The flat world (perceptions differ!) houses many kinds of people - the good, the bad, the ugly, the foxes, the lambs, the chickens, the lions and the likes. This post is about an issue many have always faced in life repeatedly....and the question that pops up right away in my mind is "Is it a crime to be innocent?"

Why are people being so manipulative in nature? What do they gain from leveraging on the naive innocence of a fellow being? The answers to these questions - is still being searched for.

I accept the fact that, smart quotient is prevalant to decide the survival of the fittest, be it in personal life or amidst corporate ettiquettes. But, i strongly feel that as you go through the different walks and phases of life meeting an ecclectic group of people the human mind which is very shrewd adapts by releasing complex hormones (unknown) to us. Surprisingly, the next time u interact in a situation, one tends to perform an action which might not be a part of the behavorial trend as well.

So, does this mean that innocent souls does not have a place to live in this world? Rather, i should suggest a seperate planet of these NAIVE beings which would obviate the need to go for wars, steal, earn and the list is endless.. The main reason of worlds locking horns together is becaus to establish supremacy. Just because, the opponent has a weak link in the chain of armours and attacking that point to prove a point of leadership does not nurture communal harmony. As, once hit, the defeated or hurted opponent might strike back like a recoiled snake....and who knows, it might hit you so bad that there is no chance of rising up again!! This situation would go on and on...talk about world peace when all that has to be targetted is the change in mindset of people!! Easily said and here, but i am aware how difficult it is to establish it.

"Survival of the fittest" : This is such a beautiful adage reflective among animals that roam cloaked in natures clothing and humans clothed in gucci and versace. One got to be smart and adaptive with situations, to be declared the supreme winner of all...but sadly, there is always a greater mind than you.

The point i would like to make here is, what do people derive from using anothers naive innocence?

1.) Do they get sinful pleasure?
2.) A hearty laughter behind the backs?
3.) A deep sleep because you are happy that you have outsmarted an innocent soul?

The torn sould does not realise that, he/she has been outsmarted...but the mind adapts and teaches you like a loving teacher (as always) about what should have been done in that situation...

Many of you might ask..so, why don't people change? hmm..to change for what? - To be a sharp nail that punctures innocence? Even if my mind adapts and teaches me how to adapt to such situations, i would still not try to manipulate fellow beings. Because i simply don't like it!!

Oh!! poor soul,
a perfect embodiment of body and mind
who decides the path you take?
yet the flat worldly beings moulds you to its wake
Acclimatize to it....you are proclaimed a smart soul
If you don't..sigh! many are a smarter soul than you

Happy and crisp...when you are light...
Sodden and sad...when you realize the put up fight
So many emotional waves...you undergo
Yet, you don't escape to be a free bargo
you stay within me....
teaching me.....goading me....but not leaving me..

Don't you ever wail when you meet soul-less beings

Soul: Yes...i do...silently in the darkest nook of my heart...
unknown to many...
but known to few....the only ones that matter to you

Don't you feel vengant on being used like a whore...

Soul: Yes..i do...anger pours out like hot lava...
but i stem it...
to protect you and make you a better person in life

Won't the world be a better place to live in?

Soul: Yes...my dear..it would...
only if you adapt to it...
to be blended among the eclectic mix

Courageous soul...i salute you with all my pride...!

Shelved Memories

My fingers hurt

for they have been crossed for long....

My emotions are no longer jaywalking the shore
as its tumultous when the slightest thought of you
crosses my neural nodes

Fireflies ensconce me
when my phone exudes the number of Jack Sparrow
A feeling so ephemeral, yet so permanent....

Oh Dear!!
wish, the past would be re-written...
to accomodate my present enduring needs....

6 degrees of seperation

What would be your answer to the question - Is the world small? Quite a few responses i have listened to say, "it indeed is!!" What with 74 percent covered with water and trillions of road mile arteries connecting diverse nations. With wireless, ethernet, revolutionary e-mail and what not is shrinking the distance between people to miniscule point levels, people are connected to each other at multiple levels.
You meet a person whom you have never seen in your life before, and when the topic rolls over to friends, both would be unnervingly connected by someone or the other in six tries. That's why the name six degress of seperation.
Consider this, i met quite a few new friends after re-locating to Chennai and surprisingly we were connected in some way or the other - be it mutual friends, schooling, college and the likes. Its pretty strange to experience this, but i have found in almost 2 out of 3 cases, which proved the veracity of the above said statement. Thats like a whooping 67 percent strike rate....
The perception is - Connectivity between people is increasing which may be due to a lot of reasons which ultimately leads to a sighed expression of "The world is too small" There can be a lot of counter-arguments to this view point, but still try this out to experience the sixDOS whenever you meet up with new people.
